Gabriela Bettini (born in Madrid, 1977) is a Spanish visual artist of Argentine origin.
From an ecofeminist perspective, her current interests transversally intertwine ecology, the tradition of landscape painting, and the place/memory binomial, in an inquiry that associates the first cultural colonizations with present-day issues.
Starting from a specific review of the history of painting and the representation of landscape and Nature, she observes how this medium has been used to promulgate the ideas on which a North Atlantic and Western hegemonic thought has been built, in relation to the current extractivist model and the socio-environmental crisis it generates. At the same time, she seeks a poetic way of pointing out the historical relationship between colonialism and neoliberalism through her own biography, marked by the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983).
Gabriela Bettini has recently exhibited at the Paço Imperial (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), at the Mariano Moreno National Library (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Conde Duque Contemporary Culture Center (Madrid, Spain) and participated to the BIENALSUR 2021. Previously, she has exhibited at the Borges Cultural Center and the Haroldo Conti Cultural Center of Memory (Buenos Aires, Argentina); the Tlatelolco Cultural Center (Mexico City, Mexico); TEA Tenerife Space for the Arts (Spain), among others.
Some of the awards she received are: the Banco Santander Foundation Award Derivada (2020); the DKV Award 2019; She obtained the MAEC-AECID Painting Scholarship at the Spanish Academy in 2015-16 (Roma, Italy); the ”la Caixa” Foundation and British Council Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies (UK).
Her work is part of collections such as the Reina Sofia National Museum; the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MiTEco); Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection (Turin, Italy); Jumex Collection (Mexico City, Mexico); MAC - Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid (Spain); the CA2M museum (Madrid, Spain); the DKV Collection (Spain); BASMOCA (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia); Caja de Extremadura Banking Foundation and the Spanish Academy in Rome (Italy).
