Alexandra Karakashian (n. 1988, Johannesburgo) es una artista sudafricana afincada en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica. A través de la instalación, el textil, la pintura y las obras sobre papel, su práctica explora las intersecciones entre materialidad, ecología, desplazamiento y memoria.
En el centro de su trabajo se encuentra una investigación sostenida en torno a un único material: el aceite de motor usado. Empleado tanto como medio como tema, el aceite se convierte en un vehículo a través del cual Karakashian investiga los sistemas de extracción, la violencia medioambiental, el poder geopolítico y la inestable relación entre los cuerpos, la tierra y los recursos naturales. Partiendo de su historia familiar armenia y de narrativas más amplias de migración y exilio, su obra reflexiona sobre lo que significa estar “sin hogar”, en un sentido histórico, geográfico y emocional.
Su proceso está profundamente arraigado en el comportamiento físico de los materiales. Permitiendo que el aceite dicte el ritmo, el movimiento y la temporalidad, Karakashian desarrolla obras que oscilan entre el control y la entrega. Densas superficies negras emergen mediante gestos de absorción, borrado, superposición y movimiento, donde el propio material parece casi vivo. A lo largo de su práctica, el aceite se entiende no solo como una sustancia industrial, sino como materia orgánica antigua que lleva en sí la memoria de la vida prehistórica, el colapso medioambiental y la transformación.
Moviéndose entre la monumentalidad y la fragilidad, el silencio y la coreografía, la obra de Karakashian crea espacios donde la violencia y la sensibilidad coexisten. Su práctica invita a una atención sostenida y a una implicación sensorial, proponiendo la propia materialidad como un lugar de resonancia política, ecológica y emocional.
Su obra forma parte de colecciones públicas como la Iziko South African National Gallery (Sudáfrica), la Spier Collection (Sudáfrica), la Darvesh Collection (EAU), la The Royal Portfolio Collection (Sudáfrica), y la Luciano Benetton Collection (Italia), así como la FAS Collection (Portugal), entre otras.
