Objets de désir

Zoulikha Bouabdellah
27 Apr - 3 Jun

Sabrina Amrani presents 'Objets de désir', the third solo exhibition at the gallery of the Franco-Algerian artist Zoulikha Bouabdellah, who explores the space between the desire to possess and object of desire itself. The object of desire does not exist in itself, but is its inaccessibility what gives value to it. The aura vanishes in the moment the object of desire is accessed, the platonic love is metabolized into a body, the fetish is emptied of meaning.

In 'Objets de désir' Zoulikha emphasizes that desire knows no borders, beliefs or gender. She shows her ability to evidentiate how, throughout history and until nowadays, the image of women has not ceased to be objectified: is women who are suffering more sharply the consequences of commodification of the body. East and West incide in this pattern of behavior, still in force in most contemporary societies.

The artist uses the hyperbole to develop a theory of gender through implications in existing clichés: from Milo’s Venus to the female icons of Arab popular culture.
