Manal AlDowayan

Manal AlDowayan es una artista Saudí, que vive y trabaja en Dubai (EAU) y Dahran (Arabia Saudita). Nacida en Dahran (Arabia Saudita) en 1973.

 

Abrazando diversos medios, el trabajo de Manal AlDowayan abarca la fotografía en blanco y negro, la escultura, vídeo, sonido, neón e instalaciones participativas a gran escala. Su práctica artística gira en torno a temas como el olvido activo, los archivos y la memoria colectiva, con un especial énfasis en el estado de las mujeres sauditas y su representación.

 

Ha documentado grupos sociales como los hombres y mujeres del petróleo en Arabia Saudita en su obra If I Forget You Don’t Forget Me y ha abordado el impacto de los medios de comunicación de masas en la propagación de borrado intencional de identidades en su proyecto Crash, destacando la no identificación de profesores de Arabia Saudita que mueren en accidentes de coche en su país natal. Sus proyectos participativos han atraído a cientos de mujeres a utilizar el arte como una nueva plataforma para hacer frente a la injusticia social como en los proyectos Tree of Guardians, Esmi-My Name, y Suspended Together.
 

En 2014 Manal fue el recipiente del NYU Abu Dhabi Fellowship y a principios de 2015 fue invitada a la Robert Rauschenberg Residency en Captiva, Florida (E.E.U.U.). Manal ha expuesto su obra en Prospect 3 New Orleans-The American Biennale (2014/15), en muestras colaterales a la Bienal de Venecia (en 2009 y 2011), y en museos de todo el mundo como el Gawngju Museum en Corea del Sur, el Louisiana Museum of Modern Art en Dinamarca, el Victoria and Albert Museum en Reino Unido y Mathaf Museum of Modern Arab Art en Qatar. Su trabajo es parte de colecciones públicas en The British Museum, Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art y Mathaf Museum of Modern Arab Art, entre otros.
